Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.

AutoCAD 2023 24.2 [April-2022]

AutoCAD is most often used to create and edit technical drawings or floor plans for architects, engineers, and other technical or blue-collar workers. Some users also use AutoCAD for computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), 3D modeling, and 3D printing. AutoCAD is used by engineers, architects, industrial designers, and other technical users in many industries, including the automotive, construction, electronics, aerospace, and petroleum industries. Although AutoCAD is very well suited to creating technical drawings, it is also used by users in many other fields.

AutoCAD originated in 1981 as an early industry standard for the desktop CAD market. It was originally developed by the Sandia National Laboratories as an alternative to expensive and proprietary commercial CAD programs such as Hewlett Packard HP-GL. The first AutoCAD release is a version 1.0 based on programming language RSX-Mac, later renamed AutoCAD 1.0. The earliest AutoCAD models, up until 1992, contained various menu screens and dialogs.

AutoCAD 2.0 (released in September 1991) was the first commercial product to include an integrated 3D modeling feature, letting users draw 3D models and lay them over their drawings. Several other companies followed this trend, including AutoCAD 2004 released by Autodesk in September 1993.

Starting in May 1995, Autodesk began developing AutoCAD Inventor, a 3D modeling system based on the solid modeling method. Autodesk and other vendors began releasing CAD systems based on the Inventor platform, and AutoCAD R14 was the first one to incorporate Inventor technology.

The latest version of AutoCAD is AutoCAD LT. It was released in March 2014 and is available on both Windows and Mac OS platforms. AutoCAD LT is a fully-integrated, visual, 2D drafting software, with an easy-to-use interface. AutoCAD LT users can perform basic 2D drafting functions such as drawing lines and arcs, creating objects, and modifying drawings. It is used mainly by technical and non-architecture professionals.

Technical and non-technical users alike rely on AutoCAD to create and modify technical drawings and plans. Although AutoCAD is intended for technical drawing, it is also used by users in many other fields.

Original design

The original AutoCAD was developed by Crown Instrument and first sold in 1988, under the codename RAD. The first version was released in 1989, and was a command-line-based application with a main window with two windows, one showing the current drawing and one showing the user interface. Its object-oriented design made it possible to automate almost any aspect of the application.

The second version, released in 1992, introduced the concept of a schematic, which was a block of drawings all with the same layer.

With version 6, the GUI was reworked and made more object-oriented, and the appearance of the interface was streamlined to a single main window. The first to use this model was AutoCAD 2000. AutoCAD 2000 was the first release of AutoCAD to use 3D graphics to communicate with other CAD systems and to display 3D objects. Version 6 also introduced the concept of command blocks. These blocks automate the command-line interface, making it easy for new users to start working.

With AutoCAD R13, the command block was replaced by a menu bar. This version introduced a new method for storing the drawing, in an XML file, which enabled the application to be updated without the need to uninstall and install the software.

Version 15 introduced command blocks, which had their own menu bar. With AutoCAD R16, the command block menu bar was replaced by a ribbon, which shortened the menu bar. A new type of command block, called block table, was also added.

AutoCAD 2017 introduced a redesigned user interface, with a black background and redesigned icons. This was the first release to receive an official numbering system and the first to receive a major overhaul of the features available in the application.

Development philosophy

The development philosophy of AutoCAD is to ensure that the software works efficiently and quickly. To this end, the software has been rewritten several times in response to customer feedback. The product line has also been updated to keep pace with technological advances.

First release
The first release of AutoCAD was available in 1989 and was known as RAD, short for release automation development. The initial version of AutoCAD was a command-line-based application with a main window and a separate window that showed the user interface.

Some of the features introduced with version 1 included:
Auto trace, allowing drawings to be created automatically from a set of coordinates
Cadalyst, a newsletter

What’s new

AutoCAD 2016

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2016

new parameters for rendering are included in AutoCAD 2016: DXF, PNG and SVG file format support; scaling and rotation of standard objects; precision of rendering is improved. AutoCAD supports the new rendering with the DXF format (free) as well as the DXF is supported by other programs like the HPGL.

In the past, AutoCAD was importing various native DXF files with precision of 300 decimal places and the ability to render objects with the new parameters. Now, AutoCAD has not been provided with such support. But AutoCAD 2016 will import and display the files with the precision of 1000 decimal places.

Moreover, this new import function adds support for the new file format. It is designed to save your drawing and modeling data in XML format, so it is easier to manage and transport drawings.

DXF files (free)

In the past, AutoCAD could only import DXF files that were originally designed to be used with Autodesk Mechanical and Autodesk Architectural products.

Now, with the DXF format, you can import DXF files (free) from other programs as well.

DXF files will be supported with the precision of 1000 decimal places, which is one more decimal places than the precision of DXF files in Autodesk Mechanical and Autodesk Architectural products.
