The Rudolf Steiner Academy of Arts and Design in Perth, Australia is the first Steiner School in the world to open on Australian soil.

Rudolf Steiner said:

“What is music, what is its root? It is nothing else but the sound which we make in our music-teachers.”

The Academy comprises the Department of Music, the Department of Dance and the Department of Visual Arts.

It has been developed with approval from the State Education Department and has been placed on the List of Approved Schools in the State of Western Australia.

The Academy offers Music, Dance, Art and Design courses at both secondary and tertiary levels. It is an independent, non-profit organisation whose vision and mission statements are based on the teachings of Rudolf Steiner.

Founded by John Zatsch, The Rudolf Steiner Academy of Arts and Design in Perth has been the birthplace of the Rudolf Steiner International Youth Festival, the Rudolf Steiner World Choir Festival and the Rudolf Steiner Inter-City Arts Festival.

In 1981, the German philosopher and philosopher of education Rudolf Steiner founded the Rudolf Steiner schools worldwide. The first school to open in Perth was established at in 1985, when it was then named the Rudolf Steiner School of Creative Arts. It was renamed in 1997 and again in 2001, and in 2001 expanded to include the three additional departments of Music, Dance and Visual Arts.

In 2004, the teaching programs became fully accredited by the Australian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (ACARA) and in 2007, the Department of Education received approval for the Rudolf Steiner Education Association of Western Australia to run the school under a lease agreement.

The school is based in the Western Australia Department of Education, Training and Employment location in Perth’s Eastern suburbs. The school has an annual budget of A$9.5 million, which is supported by a wide range of government and community funds, as well as support from WA’s private education and community sector.

The current headteacher is John Zatsch, and the current deputy head is Michele Plath-Brown.
